Kuhn's career proceeded from The Art Institute of Chicago in the depressive 1930's as a conspicuously talented painter to an eventual long life on a secluded mountain-top in Virginia's beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Here he became a devout artistic recluse for 33 years. In his later years, Robert Kuhn had little regard for the established institutions for measuring worth. He removed himself from the art world for the sake of personal, artistic freedom and took his own path. Failure was never entertained. He let his works speak for themselves and you’ll find that they speak to the heart. Following a long period of study in Mexico, Kuhn established himself as an artistic force in the Washington area as one of the very few American sculptors who worked in wood and eventually welded-steel in the late 1940's. His artist career spanned over sixty years as a master of lyrical, figurative sculpture with its varied subject matter of refreshing breadth and emotional range. For fifty of those years, he made his livelihood exclusively by the sales of his work. A noted artist and sculptor, Kuhn was a seminal figure in the creation of "welded" sculpture in America from the early 1950's. During his lifetime, he had 28 one-man shows and received over 75 awards and prizes. Even now, a touring show of 27 his works is set to begin in 2004 at the Fredrick Meijer Sculpture Garden in Kuhn’s native Grand Rapids, Michigan. Kuhn's son, Nathan, now resides at the Shenandoah Valley home and is an artist in his own right. He has exhibited his works with noted artists such as Andy Warhol. He now opens the garden as part of the Festival’s garden tour, raising funds to support the Arts of the Shenandoah Valley. Glass Crafting, Stained Glass, Fused Glass, Glassblowing, Kilncrafting Pāte de verre is a labor-intensive form of glass casting that dates to the second millennium B.C. The Mesopotamians were the first to leave records of the process which they used for inlays in jewelry and sculpture. The Egyptians improved on their techniques, using pāte de verre in intricate mosaics and vessels between 1500 and 1000 B.C. The Egyptian word for pāte de verre translates to "stone that flowers," no doubt because of the gem-like quality of its color and light reflection.
The Warsing name and talent is not new to the world. It is out of Europe and goes back 500 years. His exhibitions are numerous: South Florida, Vancouver, Australia, and Texas to name a few. James has presented his glass etchings around the world. The harness horse racer sculpture was shown at the Historical Hotel in Cheyenne, Wyoming at its 108 years of Frontier Days 2004.
