The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge

The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge was established in 1976 with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to promote the arts in the Roanoke Valley and provide services to local cultural groups. In addition, the Council served as a clearinghouse for information on the arts in the Roanoke Valley and published a yearly calendar of events.

During the 1980s, as the cultural community in the Roanoke Valley began to expand and flourish, the Council also grew and extended its focus. New initiatives included programming for children, performances showcasing new works, and more services for individual artists including an annual juried City Art Show and an artists’ registry. The Council also assumed prime responsibility for directing public art projects. In the late 1980s The Arts Council was recognized as the official arts and cultural advisory body for Roanoke City, Salem City and the Counties of Roanoke and Botetourt.

The Art Group is a gathering place; a classroom; an ever-changing exhibition area;a music venue and even a place for a friendly game of chess. We're here to get people talking with each other and sharing their ideas about the arts!

We want you- whether you are an art student, professional artist or just an art enthusiast -to be a part of The Art Group. Professional artists are encouraged to submit their work for exhibition review, budding artists are encouraged to take one of our many classes tailored to meet their needs, and art appreciators are encouraged to become a part of our gallery docent "pillars of support".

"You have made me smarter; literally raised my IQ 10 points! In our Virginia-based business, we not only sell pianos, we move them as well. Now, we have a really nice Web site that advertises our pianos and services, but we lacked the online coverage in Harrisonburg and throughout "the Valley". While our Web site was there, no one in this territory was finding our business by searching online because our site simply didn't show up as a search result on the first couple of pages.
